In 2019, at the meeting where Trojan got it's GWR - we met a chap who asked " Have you ever thought about make one powered by Electric?". We laughed, saying far too difficult (we had no EV experience, & thought there was no way we could afford the systems). Turns out he was Phil Eagleton from Voltsport.co.uk- who's a real expert, runs an EV business in Gateshead, & a genuinely nice guy (with a great team behind him). Then Phil introduced us to his partner Ian Goodman from ENRGMotorsport.co.uk Ian's a battery guru, & with their expertise - the UK Monowheel Team have made the Worlds Fastest Electric Monowheel.
Strategy
Phil made some amazing claims about how good an EV drive would be for us - with proposals. But we were planning a new build - and were not fully convinced. We had Trojan (with amazing potential), and WarHorse (which had peaked) - so after a lot of work on specs - we came up with a 2 stage programme. Phase 1 - WarHorse Conversion. A Test Vehicle to learn how the systems behave. Phase 2 - Watch this space . . . .
As always, there was more to it than first met the eye - but we spent the 'covid winter' (2019/20) sorting the details & making the mechanics, designing the electrics, making the batteries - and put it together in April 2020:-
Did it Work? - Yes - Wow !
We started tentatively, with very soft control settings - but from the very first pullaway (May 2020) - the difference to our IC machines was like Chalk & Cheese.
Total Control on launch - with no need to balance Revs to Clutch Bite, no waiting for Lambda Sensor to heat, or for the Engine to cool. Literally Twist & Go - which very soon gave us the confidence to ride in small spaces, & closer to people.
How Fast is It?
WarHorse-E is just as fast as WarHorse (with IC). It set a new GWR for Electric Monowheels on it's 2nd outing. It's peaked at over 62mph (with plenty more in the system).
