The engine in Trojan has it's pedigree in Kart racing, but we had to modify the Intake & Exhaust systems - which screwed up the fuelling. It also uses a traditional carb & float chamber - which is not helped by our changes in pitch !
In the early days, we tried various carbs & settings from the Kart experts. It was great, & we achieved some serious speeds - but they were only at 70% throttle ! Soon as we tried harder - things went downhill. It was rich & lumpy at pullayay - & leaning out at full throttle. Our GWR was achieved on a day when the thing was almost unridable.
This vid tells the tale:-
So we set about building a Rig - where we could test & tweak at home. Some serious kit - but it was worth it.
We circulate 160 litres of hydraulic fluid at pressures that can exceed 100 bar. We log Speed, Pressure, AFR, Throttle Position on our own software, while monitoring engine temps (which limit time we can run). It's all very exciting.
Inertia Dyno
Previously, we had built a rig for WarHorse. A much smaller device that used a flywheel and measured Rate of Acceleration. Still rather exciting!
