Meet the team:- |
Monowheels are our hobby. We all have/had real jobs to put food on the table, but 'pushing the limits' of these machines helps keep a smile on our faces. We all ride, but only Kev & Mark have taken them to Full Throttle:- Kevin Scott is the driving force behind our team. Kev retired in 2020 (for more time to Design & Make Monowheels?). He was Chief Engineer at Siemens Gas Turbines (Lincoln) & does our detail design. Mark Foster joined us 2018 when we were scouting for a new rider. Mark is Director of a motorsport consultancy & an amateur motorcycle racer. He jumped at the chance. Peter Kay is our calculations genius who, amongst other things, wrote the software for our test rig. When not playing with round things, PK was Lead Engineer at Napier Turbochargers. Tim Mann is our electrical guru, petrolhead & crazy ideas generator. Tim was also known to moonlight as Principal Controls Engineer at Siemens Gas Turbines. Peter Orton is our carbon fibre wizard, Race Engineer & Team Manager for Will Orton motor racing. PO owns a company that makes Kayaks for Competition & Leisure. Jim Brown is another engineer, but in what is a mystery? Jim makes 'things' & does most of our welding. We think he works for MI6. |
History of the monowheel
Late 1800's - the monowheel was invented as a hand powered mode of transport. 1901 - motorised contraptions were patented, with variations appearing for the next 50 years. For some reason, they didn't catch on? A world was lost - with everybody riding around on their monowheels. 1971 - they were re-discovered by Kerry McLean in the USA - the modern father of monowheels. 2001 - Kerry set the first Guinness World Record on a monowheel - at 57mph. 2010 - we started on Silver, encouraged by coming across Red Max (by Dave Southall), plus healthy rivalry & respect from a local competitor who raised the bar - with Anables Atom Silver only made 34mph - but taught us so much about how they work. 2015 - we took GWR - WarHorse - 61mph 2019 - we raised GWR - Trojan - 72mph 2020 - 1st Elec GWR - WarHorse-E - 59mph 2022 - we raised GWR - Trojan - 81mph 2023 - new mission - Charger for 100mph ! All of these development & achievements are a direct result of the dedication, support & opportunities given by the Straightliners club & UK&I Timing Association. We salute you. |
